Study: The current regulations in times of Corona

Summer Semester 2020
The University of Bayreuth is aware of its responsibility to its students and has begun, under changed conditions, but still to schedule, courses of the summer semester on April 20, 2020. The end of lectures is postponed from July 24 to August 7, 2020. The studies in Summer Semester 2020 at the University of Bayreuth are purely digital for all courses of study. Physical presence in Bayreuth is not required.

Winter Semester 2020/21

Winter Semester 2020/21 at the University of Bayreuth will be a "physical presence semester interlaced with an individual share of digital learning". All departments of the University of Bayreuth involved are working hard to make the necessary arrangements. Priority will be given to first-year students who we wish to welcome on site, in as far as the hygiene standards applying in autumn allow. Meanwhile, emphasis will still be on practical courses that require special laboratories or work rooms. Physical presence on the Bayreuth campus should also be afforded to students enrolled in their last semesters before final exams.

  • The start of lectures for Winter Semester 2020/2021 is to be postponed from October 12 to November 2, 2020.
  • Accordingly, the end of lectures will move from February 5 to February 12, 2021.

Enrolled and especially first-year-students can expect a high-quality programme and specially tailored counselling, support, and assistance services, even under the current circumstances, in their degree programme. The fact that not every student is technically equipped in the same way, and that the various learning contents are suitable for digital teaching in different ways, have been fully taken into account.

Orientation weeks for first semester and international students:

  • We will offer our first semester students introductory events especially tailored to their needs in the week before the start of the lecture period on 2.11.2020, i.e. in the period from 26.10. to 31.10.2020 (calendar week 44).
  • Our orientation week for international students will take place in face-to-face form (including some digital components) from 14 to 23 October, 2020. International students will receive information on registration and the course of events in good time via Welcome Services.

For information regarding the coming Winter Semester 2020/2021 please also refer to the University Governing Board Circular to all students, dated 24.07.2020.

In particular, the following provisions apply:

  • New: With the amendment of the Bavarian Higher Education Act of 10.07.2020, an individual standard period of study that deviates from the standard period of study by one semester longer than the standard period of study applies to all enrolled and non-degree students. The summer semester 2020 is therefore not considered a subject semester with regard to the regular dates and deadlines laid down in the examination regulations. To the press release of the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences and Arts (in german language).

  • The extension of the deadline is automatic. No separate application is necessary.

  • Examination requirements fulfilled in summer semester 2020 will be fully credited.

  • State examinations are subject to special regulations. Please direct any questions in this regard to the responsible ministries.

  • BAföG (student financing under German federal training assistance) will be paid regularly for the digital summer semester, too. No disadvantages will arise for those who are forced to interrupt their education under the current circumstances.  For up-to-date information on this issue, please refer to the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

  • Even without validation of the Campuscard on site, the semester ticket can be used as usual in the 2020 summer semester. For the time being and until further notice, the ticket will be the enrolment certificate in combination with valid photo ID.

For those questions still open, we are working hard - in constant communication with the Ministry - to find solutions that will guarantee course feasibility.
