Application & enrolment
You have decided on a degree programme? Good! But now, at the latest, the question arises: How do I actually get a place at university? And what do I have to keep in mind?
On this page you will find a general overview of the different admission procedures at the University of Bayreuth. With the help of the programme finder, you can find out the exact procedure your desired programme has and what deadlines apply. To do so, select "How do I get a place?" on the overview page of your desired degree programme.
Brief overview of the award procedure
The following is a brief description of all award procedures practised by the University of Bayreuth.
Please note: You should find out about master's programmes separately. It is best to select the desired master's programme from our programme finder.
Is your desired degree programme marked "free admission"? Then there is no limited number of places in the degree programme.
If you have a university entrance qualification that is valid for universities (e.g. general higher education entrance qualification), you only have to enrol within the enrolment deadlines and then you can get started! There is no selection procedure.
The good news is that many of our degree programmes are free admission.
For degree programmes with an aptitude assessment procedure, a more detailed application is required by a certain deadline. Here, certain documents are often required, e.g. curriculum vitae, presentation of competencies specific to the degree programme, etc.
There are different procedures in the selection process for different degree programmes. In some cases, admission can already be granted through preliminary selection on the basis of good grades in the transcript of records. In many cases, you will be invited to a selection interview; in the end, your Abitur grade and the grade awarded at interview will always be added together.
The good news is that it's up to you. Places are not limited. All you have to do is meet eligibility standards.
If you have passed the procedure, you will receive a notice of aptitude and can enrol during the matriculation deadlines.
Here the number of study places is fixed before the admission procedure. As a result, applicants corresponding to the number of places are selected primarily according to the criterion of the Abitur grade. The NC (numerus clausus) is determined at the end of the procedure. It is NOT set before the start of the procedure.
You have to apply via hochschulstart.de and via the University of Bayreuth by a certain deadline.
If you have been admitted, you must enrol by the deadline stated in the admission letter, otherwise the place will revert to the University, which will reallocate it.
If you choose a teaching degree programme with English, you must successfully complete an aptitude test in English at the University of Bayreuth before enrolment, for which you must register by the deadline.
If you choose a teaching degree programme with sport, you must have passed the Bavarian sport aptitude test (or a recognised equivalent) before enrolment, for which you must register by the deadline.
Information on the master's application
To obtain a place on a Master's degree programme, an application is necessary. The exact modalities may differ depending on the degree programme. Most Master's programmes are designed to be consecutive and build on the content of certain Bachelor's programmes. You can find information on this in the examination regulations under admission requirements.
Degrees from other universities are checked for comparability during the application process; sometimes missing content can be made up to a limited extent in the form of requirements at the beginning of the programme. If necessary, it is possible to apply even before receiving the Bachelor's degree certificate. In this case, the certificate must be submitted within a certain period of time. The best way to find out the specific application requirements for your desired Master's programme is to use our programme finder.
Further information on application and enrolment
You can find a lot of information on the formal application procedure and the enrolment process on the pages of the Student Administration Office for prospective students. There, first select the semester relevant for your start of studies and then the relevant procedure.
