The University of Bayreuth is an international university that pursues internationalization as a strategic goal of future-oriented research and higher education as well as global cooperation in all areas of university life. On the one hand, it is very much locally and regionally integrated, and assumes social responsibility locally. On the other hand, it plans strategically with a view to its global profile and operates worldwide in a targeted manner in research and teaching.

A sustainable network of strategically supervised international cooperation partnerships, global hubs with foreign offices and research bases in Oceania, Asia, Africa, and Europe serves the University of Bayreuth as a point of information and contact, especially for intensifying cooperation in research and teaching and for establishing and maintaining contacts in science and business.

Through the "Erasmus+" and "Global" programmes, we offer Bayreuth and international students, lecturers, and employees a wide range of opportunities for mobility abroad. Every summer, about 300 students from around 50 countries come to Bayreuth for the English-language "Bayreuth International Summer School" in July and the "Summer University for Intercultural German Studies" in August. The campus is transformed into a meeting place for young people for several weeks. Attend English-language specialised courses, study German, get to know foreign cultures, and have an unforgettable time.

The University of Bayreuth’s Alexander von Humboldt Centre of International Excellence was founded in 2019 with funds from the Excellence Strategy. The aim of the Bayreuth Humboldt Centre is to strengthen the internationality and excellence of research at the University across disciplines and to network intensively with the best universities worldwide.

In the Institute for African Studies with its "Africa Multiple" Cluster of Excellence, the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies, and the IWALEWA House, the University of Bayreuth is realigning its focus area of African Studies in close cooperation with partner institutions in Africa. With the help of local research centres such as the African Cluster Centres, it intends to make the continental and transcontinental interconnections of cultural, linguistic, social, religious, political, economic, and ecological processes more visible.
