Profile

The programme offers an internationally oriented and interdisciplinary approach to African studies. It is unique in Germany for its strong humanities focus, placing an emphasis on African languages as essential gateways to understanding African societies, cultures, and knowledge systems. Students engage with a wide range of cultural expressions, including literature, philosophy, visual and performing arts, and audiovisual media.

Structure of the Bachelor’s Programme

The curriculum is organized into modules covering African languages, linguistics, literature, philosophy, and arts. Students choose one language from Bambara, Swahili, Wolof, or Arabic, which is central to their training. The first semesters provide foundations in research and academic writing, while later semesters allow students to shape their profile through electives and a practical project, such as curating exhibitions or media work.

The University of Bayreuth is a leading global centre for African Studies, with over 50 affiliated professors and a dense network of expertise. Students benefit from the Iwalewahaus, a world-renowned research centre for contemporary African art, providing hands-on experience in curatorial practice. Additionally, small class sizes ensure individualized support throughout the degree.

Graduates are prepared for careers in cultural and intercultural work, international cooperation, media, education, and international consulting. The programme offers excellent preparation for international careers in NGOs, cultural institutions, and academia.

Students should have a strong interest in African cultures, languages, and intellectual traditions. A willingness to engage with diverse creative practices and develop critical thinking, intercultural communication, and analytical skills is essential.

The programme is taught entirely in English. It features a unique "Language across Media" component in the fifth semester to refine advanced language skills. There are no tuition fees, though a standard semester fee for public transport and student services applies.

Interested students should apply through the Student Administration Office (Studierendenkanzlei) for Bachelor’s programmes. Proof of English B2 and German A1 (the latter can be submitted by the end of the second semester) is required.

The module handbook provides an overview of the various modules that must be taken in a degree programme. It contains all the important explanations on the requirements and types of module examinations as well as on the intermediate or final examinations and serves as a kind of study guide for orientation.

Examination regulations define the content and structure of a particular degree programme in a legally binding manner. They must be approved by the Ministry of Science or accredited by an accreditation agency.
