A person wants to start a business.
The person has an idea
what kind of business he wants to start.
This is what a business idea means.
The campus is the grounds of a university.
The various buildings of the University are close to each other.
The students' halls of residence are also close by.
Students find it easy to meet each other on the campus grounds.
Students find it easy to make contacts at a campus university.
A company is a part of the industry.
A company belongs to one or more people.
A company wants to make money.
Some companies make things.
Some companies provide services.
For example, as shops, inns, or tax consultants.
Another word for company is firm.
A degree is a certificate of education.
There are different degrees.
- for school education
These are called, for example, Mittelschul-Abschluß (GCSE) or Abitur (A-levels) - for vocational training
These are called, for example, journeyman or master craftsman
for higher education
These are called, for example, bachelor's or master's degrees
There are over 185 different degree programmes at the University of Bayreuth.
For example, there are degree programmes like:
- Biology
- Geography
- Mathematics
- Mechanical engineering
Discrimination means disadvantage.
A person is discriminated against
because they seem to be different.
For example,
people are sometimes discriminated against because of:
- their skin colour
- their religion
- their sexual preferences
- and many other reasons.
Doing a doctorate means students write a doctoral thesis
and make their own contribution to research.
This research work includes:
- considering a specific question.
- conducting an investigation on this question.
- evaluating the results of the investigation.
- defending their work before an examination board.
Defending means:
the researchers answer questions about their work.
Then the students are allowed to call themselves "Doctor"
or Dr. for short.
Doctor is an academic title.
Ecology deals with how humans, animals, and plants live together in the environment. Ecology is everything that has something to do with the environment and protects the environment.

A fair usually takes place in a fair or exhibition hall.
There, the exhibitors show off
the latest ideas and products from their company.
Visitors learn about these ideas and products.
They can also order or buy these ideas and products.

When students habilitate, they can become a professor.
To do this, students have to take various examinations.
Everything that has to do with the production, selling, buying,
or swapping of things or services.
For example:
By the time it comes to buying a car,
there have been a lot of economic steps beforehand:
- The suppliers, i.e. companies, supply material to the car manufacturer
- The car manufacturer has its employees build the car
- The car then goes to a car dealership,
- The dealership advertises the car
- A person decides to buy the car
A service is, for example, given by the hairdresser
who cuts my hair.
But even my hairdresser needs:
- Suppliers who sell him shampoo and scissors, etc.
- He may also need employees
- He advertises his shop,
maybe in a newspaper or on the internet - Others may have helped him with the advertising,
for example, a computer expert. - And he needs customers to buy his services.
All these areas are part of the industry.
The industry is a very important but complicated part of our society.
A logo is a company sign.
A logo is a word or picture symbol of a company
or of a thing.
It can also be a sign
of a service
or an idea.
Some examples of media are newspapers, radio, television, and the internet.
The media inform people.
A professor works at a college or university.
A professor passes on knowledge to students and works in research in his or her field of knowledge.
Various groups, individuals and institutions join together to form a research association.
They research together on one topic.
For example:
The University of Bayreuth, the Technical University of Munich, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and the Bavarian State Research Centre for Agriculture are together researching the question:
How do different cereal varieties react to climate change?
After this research, the researchers will be able to tell farmers
what cereal variety will grow well in the future.
The research association is meant to last for 4 years.
Scientists are looking for answers to important questions.
A question must be asked precisely - only then can researchers give an accurate answer.
For example:
What are the effects of climate change?
This question is far too general.
A better research question would be:
How do individual cereal varieties react to warmer and drier summers?
Scientists can observe and describe this precisely.
They can then give an answer to this question that can be proven.
Scientific work means
working very precisely.
A scientific paper presents new results.
It must always be clear
how these results have been arrived at.
In a scientific paper, all sources must be cited.
A source can be, for example, a book or a website.
For a scientific paper, you have to look up many sources.
A degree programme is divided into semesters.
There is the winter semester.
This runs from October to March.
And there is the summer semester.
This runs from April to September.
Exams usually take place at the end of the semester.
