Mathematics, Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
As one of the oldest sciences, mathematics has always been oriented towards both basic and applied research. On the one hand, mathematics is the common language for describing structural and quantitative relationships in the natural sciences, engineering, and economics. With the help of mathematical models, mathematical solution methods and their implementation on computers, it is becoming increasingly possible to analyse, simulate, and optimise complex processes in all of these fields. On the other hand, basic mathematical research has made enormous progress in recent decades, which in turn has found fields of application in totally surprising ways, e.g. number theory/algebraic geometry in cryptography. Our society therefore needs a sufficient number of mathematically qualified experts fully aware of the possibilities mathematics provides. Today, mathematics is even regarded as a key technology in its own right.
