The opera "L'Huomo" was first performed in the Margravial Opera House in 1754 on the occasion of the visit of Frederick II; now the Wilhelmine work is finding its way back onto the Bayreuth stage. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Kordula Knaus, the Department of Musicology at the University of Bayreuth has launched the 2021 transfer research project "Materiality and Aesthetic Transformation. The Festa teatrale L'Huomo on the Bayreuth Opera Stage", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and in cooperation with the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation, the Bavarian Palace Department and Musica Bayreuth. The project will now culminate with the new production of "L'Huomo" (conductor: Dorothee Oberlinger, Ensemble 1700) at the Margravial Opera House on 5 and 6 May 2023.
"The aim of the project is to expand our knowledge of the aesthetic strategies of Wilhelmine von Bayreuth through a scientifically developed and visually prepared historically informed revival of the Festa teatrale L'Huomo at the Margravial Opera House Bayreuth," explains Prof. Dr. Kordula Knaus. "We want to make these findings permanently accessible to a broad public and experience them sensually by transferring them to the Bayreuth Opera House Museum."
A recording of the production is therefore planned, excerpts of which will then be shown in the World Heritage Museum. In addition, the project results, which will be presented in different media, will be made accessible to the public in the Opera House Museum.
Around the performances, an international conference will be held with the theme "Of careers and symbolic capital. The singing personnel of Italian opera at German-speaking courts around 1750" will take place in the Old Town Hall (Bayreuth Art Museum). This event is being organised by Dr Andrea Zedler. She is active in the Transfer Research Project and will already give an introduction to the upcoming events at the Bayreuth City Talk on 5 April 2023.
