Ahead of the 2023 UN Water Conference: European conference on freshwater pollution by microplastics

The EU-funded international collaborative project LimnoPlast is the first European project on microplastics research that systematically links natural, environmental, technical and social sciences. It is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Christian Laforsch, spokesperson of the SFB "Microplastics" at the University of Bayreuth. From March 6 to 8, 2022, UNESCO and LimnoPlast jointly invite to an international conference in Paris. The focus will be on the pollution of freshwater by microplastics. Participation is free of charge, and the event will be broadcast live via Zoom on the Internet.

On the LimnoPlast project
The LimnoPlast project, which started in 2019, is funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 programme. 13 universities, research institutions and industrial companies from eight European countries are participating. The project links environmental, technical and social sciences to address the pressing problem of microplastic pollution of ecosystems in a holistic approach. "Our conference, co-hosted with UNESCO, places microplastic pollution of freshwater in the context of the UN's global sustainable development agenda. It will present the latest scientific findings and innovative solutions that have been developed so far within LimnoPlast. In addition, the conference also sees itself as an international platform for the discussion of concepts and measures that can contribute to the reduction of global microplastic pollution and its consequential damage," says project coordinator Prof. Dr. Christian Laforsch from the University of Bayreuth, who is a member of the conference's organizing committee. At the University of Bayreuth, he heads the interdisciplinary DFG Collaborative Research Center "Microplastics."
