PhD and Postdoc positions (m/f/d) in fundamental turbulence research (ERC Consolidator Project UniTED)

Chair of Theoretical Physics I | Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Sciences

The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive and interdisciplinary profile fields in research and teaching. The Chair of Theoretical Physics I has the following vacancies:

PhD and Postdoc positions (m/f/d) in fundamental turbulence research (ERC Consolidator Project UniTED)

The project
Turbulence is ubiquitous in nature and technology. Yet, developing theories of turbulence, which ultimately all modeling applications rely on, remains an outstanding scientific challenge. The goal of the EU-funded project UniTED is to combine theory and new computational approaches to tackle this long-standing problem and enhance our fundamental understanding of highly turbulent flows.

Your profile
We are looking for excellent, highly motivated early-career researchers to join our research team. The ideal candidate should have a master's (doctoral) degree in physics with a background in complex systems, fluid dynamics and statistical physics. Programming skills as well as experience in the numerical simulation of nonlinear partial differential equations are a requirement. Fluency in English is expected.

Our offer
We offer excellent working conditions in a newly established international team at the beautiful campus of the University of Bayreuth. The earliest starting date is 4/2022. The salary and working hours are in accordance with the funding guidelines of the University of Bayreuth for early-career scientists. The salary is based on the public salary scale TV-L E13. The PhD position (66,67%) is limited to three years. A structured PhD program is offered in the graduate school of the University of Bayreuth. The postdoc position (100%) is initially limited to two years and subject to possible extension.
