Full Professor of Modern German Literature

at salary grade W3 to commence on or after 01.10.2027. This is a permanent civil service position.

The scholar to be appointed will represent the entire spectrum of modern German literature in teaching and research, with a focus on literature from 1770 to the present day. Nationally and internationally visible publications and experience in the competitive acquisition of third-party funding are prerequisites for appointment. Thematic and methodological, the profile should be compatible with the scientific focus of German studies at Bayreuth. A willingness to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation is expected.


The postholder will further develop German studies in its diverse networks in teaching and research at the University of Bayreuth and will be involved in cooperative research projects. The professor will play a key role in the German studies bachelor's, master's, and teacher training programmes.


Applicants must have a proven record in the field of modern German literature through relevant research and publication activities and broad teaching experience (including in teacher training programmes). Your research profile must demonstrate several historical and theoretical-methodological focal points, thus documenting a broad interest in literary studies issues.


A proven research interest in contemporary literature, the relationships between literature and media, theatre, and music, as well as digital humanities is desirable. Experience in academic self-governance would be an asset.

In addition to the general legal requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching, and a post-doctoral qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation). Alternatively, evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants. Exceptions will only be made if there are urgent reasons for doing so (Art. 60 para 3 BayHIG).
