Doctoral student (m/f/d) Microbiology: Morphogenesis and Synthetic Biology of Bacterial Magnetic Organelles

Chair of Microbiology

Application deadline:

The University of Bayreuth is an attractive campus university with an excellent reputation in the natural sciences and engineering. At the Chair of Microbiology of the University of Bayreuth, a position is available from September 2026 or later as

Doctoral student (m/f/d) in molecular microbiology and microbial cell biology

with remuneration according to pay grade 13 TV-L for a period of 3 years. The position corresponds to 65% of the regular weekly working hours of a full-time employee.

Project information

Magnetotactic bacteria biomineralize magnetic cellular organelles, so-called magnetosomes, with genetically defined shape and size. In a DFG-funded research project, the underlying mechanisms of magnetosome crystal morphogenesis will be investigated and engineered for the biomedical application of microbial magnetic nanoparticles by synthetic biology approaches (for further information about our research see https:// www.mikrobiologie.uni-bayreuth.de/de/forschung-research/en_research_areas/index.html).

We are seeking candidates with an MSc in Biology, Biochemistry, or closely related disciplines, a strong scientific interest, and high motivation. Ideally, you already have experience working in a molecular biological or biochemical laboratory. Very good command of German and/or English (written and spoken) is required.

The University of Bayreuth values the diversity of its employees as an enrichment and explicitly commits to the goal of gender equality. Women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. Applications from individuals with children are very welcome.
