Full Professor of German Linguistics

at salary grade W3 to commence on or after 01.10.2027. This is a permanent civil service position.

The scholar to be appointed will represent the entire spectrum of German linguistics in teaching and research. Nationally and internationally visible publications and experience in competitively acquiring third-party funding are prerequisites for appointment. Thematic and methodological profiles should be compatible with the scientific focus of German studies at the University of Bayreuth. A willingness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration is expected.

The successful candidate will further develop German studies in its diverse networks in teaching and research at the University of Bayreuth and will be involved in cooperative research projects. The professorship plays a key role in the German studies bachelor's, master's, and teacher training programmes. 

Applicants must have a broad record of research and teaching in the field of German linguistics, including relevant research and publication activities and teaching experience (including in teacher training programmes). Several research priorities are expected, including a research focus on contemporary language based on empirical methods. A proven interest in language in use (applied linguistics, conversation research, multilingualism research, etc.) and language history is desirable. Experience in academic self-governance would be an asset.

In addition to the general legal requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching, and a post-doctoral qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation). Alternatively, evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants. Exceptions will only be made if there are urgent reasons for doing so (Art. 60 para 3 BayHIG).
