Full Professor of Modern and Contemporary History
at salary grade W3 to commence on 01.10.2026. This is a permanent civil service position.
The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching, researching, and leading outreach work in modern and contemporary history. Experience in teaching, research and outreach on 19th and 20th century European history, in the acquisition of external funding and relevant internationally visible research are prerequisites for the appointment. One of your areas of expertise should be in German history. Thematically and methodologically, your profile should be compatible with the existing specialisations within the University of Bayreuth’s History Department. A willingness to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation is expected.
The incumbent will develop the historical sciences and its diverse networks at the University of Bayreuth and will be involved in cooperative research programmes. The professorship contributes significantly to the bachelor's and teacher training programmes in History. Teaching in German and English is also required as part of the master's programmes ‘Global History’, ‘History & Economics’ and ‘History in Science and Practice’. Teaching achievements in other degree programmes in which History is involved are also desirable. The ability to teach in English is expected.
In addition to the general legal requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching, and a post-doctoral qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation). Alternatively, evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants. Exceptions will only be made if there are urgent reasons for doing so (Art. 60 para 3 BayHIG).
