Full Professor of Exercise Physiology & Medical Fitness (m/f/d)

at salary grade W3 to commence at the earliest opportunity. This is a permanent civil service position.

We are looking for a scholar who can represent the field of sports medicine/sports physiology from a sports science perspective in research and teaching. The successful candidate should have an international reputation for innovative work in the field of the musculoskeletal system or movement-based neuroscience.

Research interests in at least one of the following areas are expected:

  • Physiology of healthy ageing and longevity
  • Biomarkers of muscle health
  • Sport and exercise in chronic (especially neurological) diseases
  • Neuroimaging (EEG, fNIRS, fMRI) in sport, health and disease
  • Peripheral and central mechanisms of fatigue and adaptation in competitive sports

Interdisciplinary collaboration with the disciplines represented within the Bayreuth Centre for Sports Science (BaySpo) is expected, as is the establishment of collaborations with the Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition and Health and the Bayreuth Hospital. A licence to practise medicine with an additional qualification in sports medicine or proof of relevant work experience in sports medicine is desirable but not essential.

The successful applicant will have a record of outstanding research publications in international journals with a focus on sports science and will have experience in acquiring competitive external funding. A willingness to participate in interdisciplinary research and academic self-administration is particularly desirable.

In teaching, the professorship will cover courses in training, exercise, medicine, and sports biology and sports medicine. The ability to teach in English is expected. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the further development of the Sports, Business & Law (M.Sc. and B.Sc.), Sports Technology (M.Sc.) and Sports Education degree programmes.

In addition to the general legal requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching, and a post-doctoral qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation). Alternatively, evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants. Exceptions will only be made if there are urgent reasons for doing so (Art. 60 para 3 BayHIG).
