PhD position (f/m/d) (TV-L E13, 67%)

Department of Experimental Physics I (Physics of living matter)

Application deadline:

The Department of Experimental Physics I (Physics of living matter) at the University of Bayreuth, Germany invites applications for a

PhD position (f/m/d) (TV-L E13, 67%)

to be commenced in summer/fall 2026 (flexible starting date, preferably from 1 June 2026, fixed-term contract of initially four years). Applications will be evaluated continuously, final
application deadline: 1 August 2026

The topic of the thesis will be embedded in ongoing projects on the physics of cell migration and intracellular transport. In general, our research is focused on elucidating and quantifying physico-chemical principles of dynamic self-organization and transport processes in soft and living matter on different length and time scales. This includes, for example, anomalous diffusion processes in crowded media far away from thermal equilibrium, the formation and homeostasis of cellular organelles, or the dynamic self-organization of cells on structured substrates and during embryogenesis. To this end, we mainly employ advanced light microscopy methods (e.g. partially custom-made lightsheet, spinning-disk, STED setups) and microfluidics, complemented by custom-made software tools for analysis and simulation (see also www.ep1.uni-bayreuth.de/en/research).

 Your responsibilities

  • Experiment planning, preparation, execution and quantitative analysis.
  • Supporting teaching in physics tutorials and/or practical courses (2h/week during the lecture period).
  • Promoting novel research results through participation in conferences and in publications.

Your qualifications:

  • Completed university degree (MSc or Diploma) in Physics, Biophysics, Physical Chemistry, Optical Engineering, or Cell/Molecular Biology (with additional qualifications in Physics).
  • Commitment, team spirit, strong communication skills, and curiosity for interdisciplinary scientific projects.
  • Ability to work in an independent and structured manner

What we offer:

  • A constructive, stimulating, and friendly working atmosphere in an open-minded and international team.

The position is limited according to the German Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (fixed-term contract law for academic staff) and is intended for personal academic qualification (doctorate). The duration of the employment relationship depends on both, legal and personal conditions. Furthermore, the employment conditions of the Bavarian Higher Education and Research Act (BayHIG) apply as hiring requirements.
