Junior Professor (m/f/d)

Information Systems with a focus on AI Strategy, Management, and Governance | Faculty of Law, Business & Economics

Application deadline:

The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in research and teaching. The Faculty of Law, Business & Economics at the University of Bayreuth is currently seeking to appoint a

Junior Professor of Information Systems with a focus on AI Strategy, Management, and Governance (salary grade: W1) with tenure track to W3

who will also play a

leading role in the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT (Branch Business & Information Systems Engineering)

to commence as soon as possible as a fixed-term civil service position.

Fraunhofer FIT is shaping the future by linking knowledge from information technology with questions from other areas of life with the aim of developing tailor-made solutions that support people in their work processes and help them in their leisure time.

The University of Bayreuth’s Faculty of Law, Business & Economics and Fraunhofer FIT – in particular, its branch Business & Information Systems Engineering (FIT-WI) – collaborate in the field of Information Systems. The combination of the professorship with a leading role at Fraunhofer FIT is based on the expectation that a significant contribution will be made to the inter-university cooperation of the University of Bayreuth with the Fraunhofer FIT, in particular FIT-WI.  In addition, the professorship will assume a leadership role in the FIM Research Institute for Information Management at the University of Bayreuth.

We are looking for a dynamic and creative scholar with the ability to work independently and with a high potential for development in research, teaching, and transfer. A clear research profile is expected, with a focus on AI strategy, management, and governance. This includes the development and application of contemporary approaches for the systematic planning, managing, and control of AI in organizations, with the aim of enhancing business processes and business models to improve efficiency and competitiveness. A focus on design-oriented or empirical methods is considered an advantage. Initial publication successes in renowned scientific journals are expected as well as initial experience with both publicly and industry-funded projects and the ambition to establish and lead a research group in a dynamic environment. The position therefore requires very good teamwork skills and initial experience of working in highly connected, interdisciplinary teams.

The successful candidate (m/f/d) will be involved in research and teaching as well as in third-party funded projects. This requires intensive and proactive collaboration with public funding bodies and cooperation partners from industry. An active role in the faculty’s bachelor’s and master’s courses (e.g. in Business Administration; Business & Information Systems Engineering; Finance & Information Management; Sport, Business & Law and Health Economics), also in English, is desired, as is the willingness to work together with employees at all Fraunhofer FIT locations on an interdisciplinary basis. You can expect a wide range of projects with a high degree of practical relevance, a great deal of creative freedom in research, and an environment with active promotion of young talent and attractive development opportunities. The ability to teach in English is expected.

In addition to the general legal requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, proven excellence in teaching, and the ability to carry out scholarly research (generally demonstrated by the quality of the applicant’s doctoral research). Since the completion of the doctorate (date of the doctoral certificate) no more than four years should have passed. The requirements given in the university’s Bayreuth Track Regulations also apply.

The successful candidate will initially be appointed as a fixed-term civil servant for a period of three years and will be extended for an additional three years upon successful evaluation in the third year of employment. The teaching load is currently set at five hours of instruction in the first phase and seven hours of instruction in the second phase.

The performance agreement, which defines the criteria for the interim and tenure evaluation, is drawn up by the university and the applicant during the appointment negotiations. The agreement shall include criteria in the categories of research and academic teaching, and may also include Third Mission and academic engagement. The appointment to the W3 professorship depends exclusively on the outcome of the tenure evaluation. After successful tenure evaluation, the candidate is appointed University Professor (W 3) as a permanent civil servant. Further information on the Bayreuth Track process can be found via https://uni-bayreuth.de/en/appointments.

The University of Bayreuth views the diversity of its staff as an asset and is expressly committed to the goal of gender equality. The University of Bayreuth is a member of the best practice club Family at University, and it offers “dual career support” for career-oriented partners of highly qualified employees. In addition, an extended audit conducted by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) returned a favourable review for the University of Bayreuth’s commitment to internationalization. All qualifications being equal, applicants with disabilities will be given priority.
