The academic landscape is changing. Societal transformation processes, technological disruption, changing expectations of universities and increasingly international competition are shaping the conditions in which we operate. Issues such as artificial intelligence, sustainable development, addressing skills shortages, global connectivity, and the demand for open and transparent scholarship present challenges for us — but also open up tremendous opportunities.
With the University Development Plan, we aim to respond actively to these developments. It sets out how we intend to build on our strengths, unlock new potential and further develop the University of Bayreuth both as a centre of academic innovation and as an attractive place for learning and exchange. Our goal is to safeguard the University’s long-term viability while implementing our vision for the years ahead with optimism, responsibility and determination.
Although the new BayHIG no longer imposes a legal obligation to draw up and update a higher education development plan, we regard the University Development Plan and its ongoing refinement as both a commitment and a driving force for the continued development of the University and the pursuit of our strategic goals.
At the end of 2024, we launched a participatory process to formulate the new University Development Plan. This process involved all groups within the University of Bayreuth and took a wide range of perspectives into account. In this way, we were able to bring together expertise from across the campus and incorporate it into the Plan through focused collaboration.
The University intends to incorporate some of the goals set out in the University Development Plan into the higher education agreement with the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts. This agreement contributes to safeguarding and enhancing the performance of Bavaria’s universities.
