Dr. Andrii Mironchenko from the University of Bayreuth receives the von Kaven Honorary Award

For his outstanding research work in systems theory, Bayreuth mathematician Dr. Andrii Mironchenko has been awarded this year's von Kaven Honorary Award by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Dr. Andrii Mironchenko took up a Heisenberg position in the University of Bayreuth’s Applied Mathematics research group last year. There, he works on so-called infinite-dimensional systems. For his work, the DFG will award him the von Kaven Prize on 29 October as part of the Gauss Lecture of the German Mathematical Society (DMV) in Bochum. The award is endowed with 10,000 euros and traditionally goes to mathematicians who conduct research in the DFG's Heisenberg or Emmy Noether programmes.

About Mironchenko's work

Much of mathematical systems theory is based on the fundamental structural assumption that the state space does not change over time. However, this assumption does not hold in many natural and man-made systems. A typical problem of this kind is to design an optimized, adaptive traffic control system so that the controller remains functional and scalable even when new roads and vehicles enter or leave the network. A related problem is the organization of a smart power grid that ensures robust and efficient power generation and transmission even when the size and topology of the grid change due to the connection and disconnection of microgrids. Mironchenko is working to develop a general paradigm for modelling such systems.

Academic background

After studying applied mathematics at the University of Odessa, Ukraine, Andrii Mironchenko earned his doctorate at the University of Bremen on the stability of infinite-dimensional control systems. He received his habilitation at the University of Passau in 2023. After working as a Privatdozent at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria, he moved to the University of Bayreuth in December 2024.

Mironchenko is the author of more than 70 journal and conference papers on control theory and applied mathematics. He is also co-founder and co-organizer of the biennial workshop series “Stability and Control of Infinite-Dimensional Systems” and a senior member of the international professional association IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). In 2023, he received the IEEE CSS George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award and in 2024 the Outstanding Habilitation Award from the University of Passau.

The von Kaven Prize

The von Kaven Prize is usually awarded to mathematicians participating in the DFG's Heisenberg or Emmy Noether programmes as a special distinction, but it can also be awarded on recommendation for outstanding research achievements by mathematicians working in the European Union. The selection is made by the DFG's Mathematics Review Board. The prize money comes from a foundation established in 2004 by mathematician Herbert von Kaven in collaboration with the DFG. Von Kaven was particularly interested in the foundations of mathematics and dedicated his life to promoting them. He died in 2009 at the age of 101.
