University of Bayreuth, Press Release No. 004/2026, 21 January 2026
University of Bayreuth improves in several subjects in THE Subject Ranking
In the Times Higher Education Subject Ranking published today, the University of Bayreuth has moved up in several areas. It performs particularly well in the field of computer science, which includes the globally dominant topic of artificial intelligence.
Once again the University of Bayreuth has demonstrated its international competitiveness in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) Subject Ranking. Several subjects significantly improved their rankings compared to last year, while others confirmed their already strong results from the previous year. This shows that the University continues to be a dynamic and attractive location for research and study.
The advances in three subject areas are particularly pleasing:
• Computer Science improved from 401–500 to 301–400, moving into a higher international performance class. With topics such as computer science, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies, this subject area covers important fields of the future.
• Life Sciences moved from 251–300 to 201–250. The ranking thus underlines the scientific strength and appeal of the subjects of biology and sports science, as well as the research areas of the Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition, and Health in Kulmbach.
• Social Sciences made a significant leap from 401–500 to 301–400, strengthening the University of Bayreuth's visibility in the social sciences. This category covers key subject areas such as media studies, sociology, and geography.
Stable rankings also demonstrate the consistent quality of other subject areas:
• Arts and Humanities: unchanged at 251–300
• Engineering: unchanged at 251–300
• Physical Sciences: unchanged at 301–400
"These results confirm the sustainable development of our university," says University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible. "The improvements in several subjects demonstrate that our strategic focus on research, internationalisation and innovative study programmes is having a tangible impact. At the same time, they are an incentive to continue along this path."

About the THE subject ranking
The THE subject ranking is part of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, which evaluates universities worldwide on the basis of specific subject areas. It provides detailed insight into the performance of universities in various academic disciplines and complements the general university ranking. The evaluation criteria include research (volume, income and reputation), teaching (reputation for excellent teaching, supervision and the teaching-learning ratio), citations (research impact, average citation frequency per publication), internationalisation (proportion of international students and staff, international collaborations) and income from industry (third-party funding for research and partnerships).
