University of Bayreuth, Press Release No. 053/2024 – 08.05.2024
Living commitment on the green campus of the University of Bayreuth
For one week, everything revolves around “sustainability” on the green campus of the University of Bayreuth. This year, the Sustainability Week will take place from 13.05.2024 to 17.05.2024 and will once again offer a diverse program.
Sustainability is firmly anchored in the philosophy of the University of Bayreuth. It was one of the first Bavarian universities to adopt a comprehensive sustainability strategy in 2021. This strategy is brought to life above all by the students of the University of Bayreuth. They demonstrate this every year during Sustainability Week.
It is organized by the Student Parliament in cooperation with GreenCampus and the Vice President for Digitalization, Innovation and Sustainability. Lectures, workshops, discussions and guided tours are primarily intended to give students, but also other interested parties, an insight into the university's sustainability-related research, solution strategies and active engagement on campus. Since 2023, the University's Sustainability Award has also been presented by the President as part of the theme week. The Studierendenwerk Oberfranken is also participating in this year's Sustainability Week and will only be offering vegetarian and vegan dishes at lunchtime in the Frischraum from 13.05.2024 to 17.05.2024.
ClimatePuzzle: The ClimatePuzzle workshop makes scientific information more accessible. It is designed so that newcomers as well as climate experts can take something away and contribute. Swarm intelligence is the key to recognizing the connections between climate change. As a group, participants work out the causes and effects of climate change based on the IPCC reports. General conditions: Participation is open to everyone and is limited to 16 people. If you are interested in participating, please register via green.campus@uni-bayreuth.de by Friday, May 10, 2024, 5:00 p.m.
When: Monday, 13.05.2024, 1-4 p.m.
Where: S46
Guided tour of the Bayreuth climate forest: In April 2019, a team of students from the University of Bayreuth and external partners carried out a planting campaign to reforest the spruce-pine forest on the Buchstein with various tree species. The forest has recently been monitored by moisture sensors in the soil and dendrometers that measure the growth of the trees. What could the forest of the future look like? Do we need a change in forestry? And what characterizes sustainable tree species? The Klimawald Bayreuth team will answer these questions during the guided tour. Please register for the guided tour in advance by emailing klimawaldbayreuth@gmail.com.
When: Monday, 13.05.2024, 5 p.m.
Where: Climate forest 1.0 at the Buchstein

Bike scavenger hunt/Alleycat of the Radbox: The concept comes from the bike courier scene: an Alleycat is basically a scavenger hunt on bikes through the city. At the beginning, all participants are given a “manifest” - a list of stations that must be completed in no particular order. There is a task to complete at each station in order to collect points. So it's not speed that counts, but also local knowledge, skill and ability. Registration is possible via the Radbox eLearning course. Non-university participants can enquire at radbox@uni-bayreuth.de.
