The Shanghai Ranking is considered the most important indicator of a university’s research strength and serves as a key international benchmark. Researchers and students alike use it to identify institutions that offer a particularly research-friendly environment for their careers or education.
The University of Bayreuth has maintained the success it achieved last year: it is once again ranked in the 401–500 group globally and remains among the top 35 universities in Germany. Back in 2022, the university was placed in the 701–800 group worldwide and in the 40–43 group nationally.
The ranking includes categories such as “Per Capita Academic Performance (PCP),” “Highly Cited Researchers (HiCi),” and “Publications in Prestigious Journals like Nature and Science (N&S).” For the 2025 ranking, over 2,500 universities were assessed, and the top 1,000 were ranked. A total of 51 German universities are featured in the ranking. The Shanghai Ranking, officially known as the “Academic Ranking of World Universities,” has been published annually since 2003 by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.
