Research Award for Historian at the University of Bayreuth

Prof. Dr. Joël Glasman has been awarded the research prize by the Foundation of the French Red Cross. The donors commend his work on humanitarian aid at the Institute for African Studies (IAS) and within the Excellence Cluster "Africa Multiple" at the University of Bayreuth.

Prof. Dr. Joël Glasman is a professor of African history at the University of Bayreuth. His research focuses on the contemporary history of West Africa, colonial history, and humanitarian aid. The award was presented to him in November by Anne Rasmussen, historian, academic director at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), and board member of the Foundation of the French Red Cross. The Foundation honors his historical research on humanitarianism, governance, and humanitarian knowledge, as well as his advocacy for the use of humanities and social sciences by practitioners of international aid systems. His latest publication is "Petit manuel d'autodéfense à l'usage des volontaires: Les humanités humanitaires" ("Humanitarian Humanities. A critical handbook for aid workers")

The French Red Cross Foundation is a research foundation dedicated to humanitarian and social work. Through it, the Red Cross aims to promote scientific knowledge, ethical considerations, and social innovations to advance work serving the most vulnerable. The research award from the French Red Cross Foundation recognizes completed scientific works or innovative approaches dealing with humanitarian and social issues in both the North and the South.
