Prof. Dr Kai Purnhagen appointed as expert to the European Parliament

Prof. Dr. Kai Purnhagen, Chair of Food Law at the University of Bayreuth, has been selected to serve in a distinguished expert capacity for the European Parliament. The renowned legal scholar will support the rapporteurs of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) in their ongoing legislative work on regulating genetically modified microorganisms (GMMs).

More specifically, Prof. Dr. Kai Purnhagen is accompanying parliamentary deliberations on a proposed directive by the European Commission that reorganises key issues concerning the placing on the market of genetically modified microorganisms and related regulatory areas. As an independent expert, he will contribute his academic expertise through briefings, written opinions, and participation in hearings and expert discussions at the European level. His analyses and assessments will make an important contribution to evidence-based, legally sound and balanced legislation.

“Being approached by the European Parliament is a great recognition of my academic work,” says Prof. Dr. Kai Purnhagen. “Particularly in highly complex and socially sensitive areas such as the regulation of genetically modified microorganisms, it is crucial to bring together legal, scientific and practical perspectives. I am very pleased to be able to support this process in an advisory capacity.”
