On a plot of land measuring around 0.8 hectares near the University of Bayreuth’s Botanical Garden, Mayor Thomas Ebersberger, University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible, Provost Dr. Nicole Kaiser, and Vice Presidents Prof. Dr. Nina Nestler, Prof. Dr. Susanne Tittlbach and Prof. Dr. Volker Ulm took up spades and, in a joint tree-planting event involving a total of 51 trees, made visible the deep-rooted connection between the university and Bayreuth.
“With this planting campaign, we are sending a visible message of sustainability, responsibility, and community. The trees represent not only the past, but also the next 50 years – and thus a future in which the university and the city continue to grow together, share knowledge, and shape living spaces,” said University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible.
Mayor Thomas Ebersberger also paid tribute to the university’s significance for the city: “With nearly 12,000 students, the university is an enormous stroke of luck for Bayreuth. It makes our city younger, more creative, more international – and it has helped us become a region of economic strength. We want to continue working together to ensure Bayreuth remains a city that thinks young, lives research, and is open to new ideas,” said Ebersberger.
The tree-planting campaign highlights the shared commitment to sustainability and quality of life in Bayreuth. It is intended not only as a symbol of ecological responsibility, but also of the close connection between academia, the urban community, and future generations.
