University and City of Bayreuth Plant for the Future Together

To mark the 50th anniversary of the University of Bayreuth, the university and the city have come together to make a joint statement for sustainability and collaboration: 50 trees have been planted near the Botanical Garden – symbolising 50 years of the University of Bayreuth and 50 years of Bayreuth as a university city. In addition, a 51st tree was planted as a “Tree of the Future”, representing the continued growth and unity between the university and the city.

On a plot of land measuring around 0.8 hectares near the University of Bayreuth’s Botanical Garden, Mayor Thomas Ebersberger, University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible, Provost Dr. Nicole Kaiser, and Vice Presidents Prof. Dr. Nina Nestler, Prof. Dr. Susanne Tittlbach and Prof. Dr. Volker Ulm took up spades and, in a joint tree-planting event involving a total of 51 trees, made visible the deep-rooted connection between the university and Bayreuth.

“With this planting campaign, we are sending a visible message of sustainability, responsibility, and community. The trees represent not only the past, but also the next 50 years – and thus a future in which the university and the city continue to grow together, share knowledge, and shape living spaces,” said University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible.

Mayor Thomas Ebersberger also paid tribute to the university’s significance for the city: “With nearly 12,000 students, the university is an enormous stroke of luck for Bayreuth. It makes our city younger, more creative, more international – and it has helped us become a region of economic strength. We want to continue working together to ensure Bayreuth remains a city that thinks young, lives research, and is open to new ideas,” said Ebersberger.

The tree-planting campaign highlights the shared commitment to sustainability and quality of life in Bayreuth. It is intended not only as a symbol of ecological responsibility, but also of the close connection between academia, the urban community, and future generations.

The planting was carried out in close cooperation with Bayreuth’s municipal gardening department and was based on a proposal from the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry. The selected mix of deciduous and coniferous trees was deliberately chosen with climate adaptation in mind, ensuring green structures remain visible even during leafless months. In this way, the 51 trees enrich the urban landscape year-round along the “Path of Biodiversity”, opposite the Studentenwald.

The tree-planting initiative is one of the final joint activities between the university and the city in this anniversary year. Earlier, the two had celebrated together at the citizens’ festival and engaged in numerous public discussions at the “neuseum”. To round off the anniversary year and as a festive highlight of the celebrations, a grand ball will be held on 29 November at the Protestant Centre in Bayreuth, once again bringing together city and campus.
