University of Bayreuth sets new standards in legal education

With the launch of the German-taught LL.M. in Business Law in the winter semester 2026/27, the University of Bayreuth is completing its innovative study model, which rethinks traditional legal education in Germany.

Berufsfelder jura hoch3

A concept unique across Germany enables students, in parallel with the First State Examination in Law, to obtain two additional qualifications: the LL.B. in Law and Economics, already aligned with the law degree, and the new LL.M. in Business Law.

What makes this special is that the master’s programme is largely integrated into the regular law curriculum. Students benefit from an efficient study pathway and strategically expand their expertise in business law without detours or additional study time.

“With ‘Law x3’, we combine the proven state examination system with the modern demands of the labour market,” explains Prof. Dr. Kay Windthorst, programme coordinator for both the LL.B. and LL.M. at the University of Bayreuth. “Our graduates are not only exceptionally well trained in law, but also bring valuable economic expertise.”

The model responds to current challenges in legal education and addresses criticism of the strong dependence on the state examination. While many of Germany’s states and universities are now introducing integrated bachelor’s programmes, Bayreuth goes a decisive step further by offering three professionally qualifying degrees within a single course of studies.

‘Law x3’ thus provides students not only with enhanced career prospects, but also with greater security and flexibility on their path into the legal professions.
