University of Bayreuth, Press Release No 029/2023 - 21 March 2023
Prof. Stefan Leible elected new chairman of Universität Bayern e.V.
At the general meeting of Universität Bayern e.V. on 17 March 2023, the twelve Bavarian universities elected Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible, President of the University of Bayreuth, as the new Chairman with effect from 01 April 2023. The President of the Technical University of Munich, Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann, was elected as the new Deputy Chairman.
The accomplished and experienced President of the University of Bayreuth takes office in a time of global challenges. The lawyer has been President of the University of Bayreuth for almost ten years and was previously its Vice President for International Relations and External Relations for three years. With Prof. Leible, an experienced science manager becomes the new President of the University of Bavaria, who wants to make a progressive contribution to the further positive development of the Bavarian universities. "I thank the members for the great trust they have placed in me through this election. Through their excellent research and teaching, the universities in Bavaria play a major role in the innovative strength of Bavaria and Germany. I would like to further develop and support this high status. In the association of Bavarian universities, I see myself as a communicator who bundles and communicates common interests and balances and moderates different points of view," says Prof. Leible.
Prof Doering-Manteuffel hands over to Prof Leible
Manteuffel, President of the University of Augsburg, headed the Bavarian University Conference "Universität Bayern" - the longest term in the history of the institution. She now wants to concentrate on her work at the University of Augsburg. “The major university reform has been clarified. Now I can confidently place the presidency in someone else's hands! During my term of office, we were able to set the course," says the outgoing chairwoman. One of the most important of these concerns the new Bavarian Higher Education Act, the wording of which clearly reflects the handwriting of the Bavarian University Conference. The presidents of the Bavarian universities, as members of the University of Bavaria, thanked the outgoing chairperson Prof. Doering-Manteuffel for her great commitment and energy for the interests of the universities.
Science Minister Markus Blume: “The University of Bavaria is a strong partner alongside the Bavarian state government. Together we ensure excellent framework conditions in research and teaching. The High-Tech Agenda Bavaria, the new Higher Education Innovation Act, the High-Tech Transfer Initiative and our most recent framework agreement are just a few examples of how we are jointly developing Bavaria as a university location towards the future. I congratulate the President of the University of Bayreuth, Prof. Stefan Leible, on being elected Chairman of Universität Bayern e.V. and look forward to a trusting cooperation. I am sure: With the dynamism and agility with which he has promoted 'his' University of Bayreuth in recent years, he will also energetically tackle his tasks for the benefit of the entire Bavarian university landscape. On the occasion of the major change in leadership, I would like to thank the previous Chair, President Prof. Sabine Doering-Manteuffel, for five terms as Chair, during which many pioneering decisions were made.”
The new deputy, Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann, has been President of the TU Munich for three and a half years and has already been Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation at the TUM for ten years (2009 to 2019). Prof. Hofmann thus has a high level of expertise in the management of a large university of excellence and a pronounced knowledge of the national and international scientific landscape. "I am delighted that I have been elected as deputy and I am happy to use my experience and energy for responsible research, trustworthy innovations and far-sighted teaching and further education concepts at Bavarian universities," explains Prof. Hofmann.
