Bayreuth becomes a game development hub once again: Global Game Jam 2026

Whether they have technical talent, a creative streak or simply a love of games, participants from a wide variety of fields come together at the Global Game Jam to create new gaming worlds in 48 hours. The University of Bayreuth is once again providing rooms, equipment and an inspiring atmosphere for the event.

Games Jam

One of the world's best-known game jams, the Global Game Jam (GGJ), will take place on the weekend of 30 January to 1 February 2026, starting at 5 p.m. Since 2014, the University of Bayreuth has also been one of the official locations in Bavaria, providing participants with work equipment and catering.

The Global Game Jam is an event where video and board games are created within 48 hours based on a given theme, slogan or saying. The theme is announced at the same time worldwide by the official founders of the GGJ. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people from different degree programmes or cities, exchange ideas about common interests, and find new allies. After 48 hours, on Sunday, all the games created, whether complete or not, are presented.

There are several rooms with approximately 30 computers on which some programmes such as Unity 3D, Game Maker Studio, 3ds Max, Adobe Suite, etc. are installed. If possible, we strongly recommend bringing your own laptops/computers so that everyone can actively participate. The basic versions of Unity 3D and Game Maker Studio can be downloaded free of charge from the internet.

Conditions of participation

Anyone aged 18 or over who is interested in games can take part in the Global Game Jam.

Registration at https://gamejam.uni-bayreuth.de/ is requested for better planning of catering and T-shirts, but is not mandatory.
