“Doors Open with the Mouse” on the University of Bayreuth Campus

On Friday, 3 October 2025, the University of Bayreuth will open its doors to curious minds of all ages as part of the nationwide “Mouse Door Opener Day.” This year’s theme is “Playtime”, inviting visitors to explore, question, and experiment with science in a playful way. Expect a day full of hands-on activities, experiments, and fascinating insights into current research.

In celebration of the University of Bayreuth’s 50th anniversary – and the 50th birthday of the blue elephant from the “Mouse” television programme– the campus will transform into a discovery zone for families. From 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, children aged five and up can take part in interactive activities (language: German!). 

•   How is electricity chemically generated and stored? What exactly is a battery?
Children aged 5+ will explore the basics of energy storage with researchers from the Collaborative Research Centre MultiTrans (CRC 1585) and build their own batteries in the lab.
Duration: 45 minutes, starts hourly from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

•    Colouring flowers, experimenting with colors, feeding bees, tracking microplastics
Children aged 7+ will explore colorful chemical reactions, dye flowers, learn about microplastics, and meet a real bee colony – organized by the Biology and Chemistry Education team.
Duration: 30–40 minutes, starts hourly from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM

•    Back to the past: A journey through Earth’s history
The paleobotanical collection invites children aged 5+ on an open exploration through the Phanerozoic era: dinosaurs, mammoths, and other prehistoric creatures await!
Open visit anytime between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM

•    What is plastic, what happens to it in the environment, and what do animals think about it?
Children aged 5+ will learn what plastic is, how microplastics form, and how they affect animals and the environment – presented by the Collaborative Research Centre Microplastics (CRC 1357).
Duration: 30–40 minutes, starts hourly from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

•    Fascination with soil in the Botanical Garden - How important is soil for our lives?
Children aged 5+ will dig deep – literally – to uncover the hidden secrets beneath our feet.
Duration: 45 minutes, starts hourly from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

•    High-tech from spider silk
Children aged 10+ will visit real research labs: spider feeding, 3D printing of heart tissue, and nanofleece production with spider silk show how biopolymers are used in medicine.
Duration: 45 minutes, starts hourly from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

•    The great recycling expedition: tracking down plastic
Children aged 10+ become recycling experts. They analyze waste, explore material properties, and create new items from plastic scraps – complete with a discovery certificate!
