Documentary Film about Kulmbach Student to Be Screened at Cineplex Kulmbach

The Cineplex Kulmbach will screen I AM FINE BUT, a documentary about a student of the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Bayreuth’s Kulmbach Campus, on 21 June at 10 am. Admission is free. The award-winning film centres on the experiences of Ezenge Robincrusoe Angeli during his “weltwärts” voluntary service in Germany prior to his university studies.

Ezenge Robincrusoe Angeli has been studying Food Quality and Safety at the Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition and Health in Kulmbach since October 2024 and is the main protagonist in the documentary I AM FINE BUT, which won the Audience Award in the “Documentary” category at the 2024 Provinziale Film Festival in Eberswalde. The young Cameroonian came to Berlin in 2019 for a “weltwärts” federal voluntary service programme in the fields of environmental education and nutrition – his first major journey abroad. The Berlin-based production company redgreenfilms turned this life-changing year into the documentary I AM FINE BUT, which will be shown in a special screening on Saturday, 21 June 2025, at 10 am at Cineplex Kulmbach.

With great sensitivity, I AM FINE BUT explores how the voluntary service shaped Angeli, what he learned about Germany – and what Germans, in turn, could learn from him. The film addresses the highs and lows of Angeli’s path from Cameroon to Germany, the challenges and setbacks he faced, and how he managed to find his place in a foreign country.

After the screening, Angeli will speak about his experiences and answer questions from the audience. The event will provide an opportunity for open discussion among international and German students on topics such as migration, opportunities, friendship, solidarity, and life in Kulmbach. The film will be shown in English with German subtitles. Residents of Kulmbach and students are warmly invited to the film matinée. Admission is free.

The event is organised by the university chaplaincy Bayreuth-Kulmbach (Protestant Student Community / Catholic University Community) and the Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition and Health at the University of Bayreuth in Kulmbach. It is supported by the federal programme Demokratie leben! (“Live Democracy”).

About Ezenge Robincrusoe Angeli: After completing secondary school, Angeli earned a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Douala, Cameroon, followed by a Master’s programme in Engineering Design in Hygiene, Security and Industrial Safety at the National Higher Polytechnic School of Douala. He interrupted his studies to participate in the voluntary service in Berlin and completed his degree in 2021. Following roles as a project coordinator for environmental protection, education, and sustainability projects in Cameroon and a UNESCO voluntary service placement in Schönau, Black Forest, he completed an internship in quality assurance at a cosmetics company. In 2024, he began his Master’s in Food Quality and Safety at the Kulmbach Campus. Alongside his studies, he works as a student assistant at the faculty and as a working student in food law at RAPS GmbH & Co. KG in Kulmbach.

About the Documentary: I AM FINE BUT was directed and edited by Marc Sebastian Eils and produced by redgreenfilms GbR. The 55-minute documentary premiered at the Achtung Berlin Film Festival in 2024, where it was nominated for Best Medium-Length Film. It went on to win the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Provinziale Film Festival in Eberswalde.
