More than 400.000 € funded for the Bavaria-Queensland Research Alliance

The research alliance between the Free State of Bavaria and the Australian state of Queensland is awarding development grants for research projects for the first time. The alliance is coordinated by the University of Bayreuth.

The Bavaria-Queensland Collaborative Research Program is a joint initiative between the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (StMWK) and the Queensland Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI), which was signed in May 2023.

The research alliance offers two funding lines which are organized and coordinated by the Bavaria-Australia Coordination Office at the University of Bayreuth: ten successful projects within the Seed Grant (worth up to €10,000) were announced back in August 2024 and now the four winning projects within the Development Grant (worth up to €80,000) are chosen. These projects will be funded by the Bavarian government over a maximum period of two years. The respective project partners in Queensland will be co-financed by the local government in the same amount.

The funded projects deal with topics that are in line with the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria, more specifically 3D printing of patient-specific, biodegradable scaffolds for bone regeneration, managing electronic waste through the use of bio-based, recyclable electronics, manufacturing sustainable products of biopharmaceuticals and renewable fuels, as well as improvements in patient care and the prevention of cerebral hemorrhages and strokes caused by intracranial aneurysms.

The selected projects are:

  • Convergence of composite material manufacturing and patient specific implant design (CoCoManuFact) Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and Queensland University of Technology
  • Additive Green Electronics Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt and University of Southern Queensland
  • Scaling SMART Solar Bio-Manufacturing Processes Technische Universität München and University of Queensland
  • Advanced manufacturing of an intracranial aneurysm medical device for rupture risk prediction Technische Universität München and University of Queensland

The project leaders are delighted about this opportunity.

“The new funding for the Queensland-Bavaria Collaborative Research Program offers a fantastic opportunity for enhanced collaboration and knowledge exchange between the two regions,” says Prof. Dr. Susanne Mayer, Overall Laboratory Director of the Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery at the Musculoskeletal University Centre of LMU Munich
