Project Launch for a Pioneer of Sustainable Circular Economy

In January, the EU-funded project BioFairNet, involving the University of Bayreuth, officially commenced. BioFairNet is based on the concept of a bio-circular economy, which seeks to combine technological innovation with social justice to make the economy more ecological and sustainable. A total of 13 international research institutions are participating in the project.

The aim of BioFairNet is to transform regions and value chains heavily reliant on greenhouse gas-intensive industries, such as agriculture and mining, into pioneers of a sustainable bio-circular economy. To achieve this, the EU-funded HORIZON research project, with a total budget of €4.67 million, will develop a digital cooperative network. This network will serve as a digital platform for stakeholder engagement, mapping, disseminating, and transferring knowledge. Furthermore, it will facilitate exchanges between stakeholders to support the ecological transition.

The Chair of Engineering Design and CAD at the University of Bayreuth is one of 13 international research institutions involved. Dr.-Ing. Tobias Rosnitschek, Senior Academic Councillor at the Chair, leads the work package titled "Green Information Factory for a Green and Just Transition." This work package is responsible for developing data-driven methods to evaluate emerging bio-circular economy approaches. Approximately €400,000 from the funding will go to the University of Bayreuth.

The project adopts an interdisciplinary methodology, incorporating various social sciences, among other fields. The digital platform, which is the final product of the research project, will be developed in collaboration with key stakeholders and end users. Its purpose is to bridge the gap between experts, public administration, businesses, and other stakeholders on the topic of the bio-circular economy.

The project has a duration of four years and is funded by the EU's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. It is coordinated by the University of Naples Federico II, with additional participating research institutions located in Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Canada, Kenya, and Spain.
