Behind the Scenes of Knowledge

As part of its anniversary year, the University of Bayreuth (UBT) will be showcasing its work under the motto “Mission Innovation – Fit for the Future” at the Bayreuth Innovativ event, contributing a wide range of exhibits and interactive activities. The event, taking place on 21 June 2025 from 10:30 a.m., brings together local businesses, start-ups, and research institutions with the people of Bayreuth to make innovation tangible.

In the heart of the city centre, Bayreuth’s “Stadtparkett” will once again become a stage for ideas, technologies, and visions of the future. Visitors to Bayreuth Innovativ can look forward to an interactive programme: companies, start-ups, research institutions, and inventive minds will showcase what innovation means today – with hands-on experiences, opportunities to try things out, and ways to get involved.

At the core of the programme are the University of Bayreuth’s Competence Labs. Through tech-based games, challenges, and experiments, they offer insights into key societal, technological, and economic questions of today and tomorrow – and demonstrate in practical terms how modern research works.

Six innovation labs from the University of Bayreuth will be taking part in Bayreuth Innovativ, presenting current projects and developments:

  • Digital Technologies Lab: This lab will present applications from the field of virtual reality, offering visitors vivid insights into technological interconnections – for example, through a balance training exercise using VR headsets.
  • Game Innovation Lab: The Game Innovation Lab demonstrates how games can be used as a medium for research and innovation. Interactive examples – such as a retro arcade machine – illustrate how playful approaches can help to explore technological and social developments and open up new perspectives.
  • Keylab Additive Innovations: This lab provides insights into the world of additive manufacturing, more commonly known as 3D printing. At interactive stations – such as a basketball challenge featuring a 3D-printed ball – practical applications of this technology will be presented.
  • Keylab Glass Technology: The Keylab for Glass Technology showcases current developments in the field. Interactive exhibits, such as particularly impact-resistant glass, demonstrate how material research translates into real-world applications.
  • Material Innovation Lab: This lab offers a glimpse into the latest research in materials science. Using accessible examples – such as a tin can knockdown game featuring a compressed foam ball – innovative materials and their potential applications will be introduced.
  • Food Valley Kulmbach: The Food Valley presents innovative concepts around food and nutrition. The focus is on combining sustainability, technology, and enjoyment. Visitors can hop on a “smoothie bike” to pedal their way to a fresh smoothie – experiencing first-hand how healthy eating, environmental awareness, and exercise can be interconnected in a fun and engaging way.

In addition to the research stations, representatives from the university’s Executive Board and Human Resources Department will be available to provide information about career prospects and job opportunities. As such, the event is also an opportunity to learn more about the University of Bayreuth as an employer. UBT is not only a centre of excellence for research, teaching, and knowledge transfer – with around 2,700 employees, it is also one of the largest employers in the region. Alongside academic staff, dedicated professionals in science management, administration, and technical roles help to shape the university’s forward-looking operations.

About the eventBayreuth Innovativ is part of the University of Bayreuth’s 50th anniversary celebrations and is dedicated to fostering dialogue between science and society. The event offers exciting insights into current research and development projects and showcases the region’s innovative strength – right in the heart of the city. The University of Bayreuth’s programme is coordinated by its Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, which promotes knowledge transfer from science to business and highlights creative problem-solving approaches.

Bayreuth Innovativ is a joint project of the City of Bayreuth, the Bayreuth Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK Oberfranken Bayreuth), the Chamber of Crafts for Upper Franconia (Handwerkskammer Oberfranken), and the University of Bayreuth.
