Anja Ramsperger receives the Bavarian Culture Prize
For her outstanding doctoral thesis in the field of biology, Dr Anja Ramsperger from the Collaborative Research Centre 1357 Microplastics at the University of Bayreuth has been awarded the Bavarian Culture Prize. The prize, presented by Bayernwerk AG (Bayernwerk), honours not only cultural creators but also doctoral researchers from Bavarian colleges and universities.
In her doctoral thesis, Ramsperger explores how the surface properties of plastic particles smaller than one millimetre interact with microorganisms and cells. Her findings show that the surface characteristics of microplastic particles are crucial. This contribution enhances future research in this field, advancing our understanding of the impact of plastics within the human body.
"I am incredibly pleased that my dissertation has been recognised with the Bavarian Culture Prize. It is a significant acknowledgment of the dedication and hard work I put into this project. I am grateful for the support I received at the University of Bayreuth throughout the entire process," says Ramsperger.
The Bavarian Minister of Science and the Arts, Markus Blume, emphasised: "Science and the arts are closely intertwined – they are the lifeblood of a free society. It is both right and important that we honour young talents from our universities for their ideas and courage in the science category of the Bavarian Culture Prize. These prizewinners infuse our scientific landscape with a future-focused spirit. It is evident that our universities are true centres of talent and innovation."
Dr Egon Leo Westphal, Chairman of Bayernwerk AG, views science as the foundation for the reality of tomorrow: "Innovation, technology, and science are the bedrock upon which we can change current realities or create new ones – this applies not only to the energy sector but to all areas of life. Science shows us what is necessary and what is possible. This year's prizewinners from the higher education landscape delve into crucial societal questions and offer valuable contributions to the realities of today and tomorrow. With this award, we seek to honour their achievements."
The awards in the science category are each endowed with €3,000. Additionally, all 33 prizewinners received the bronze "Gedankenblitz" (Flash of Thought) statue, crafted by the Schwandorf sculptor Peter Mayer. The winners are selected by Bavarian state universities, art academies, and colleges, while the recipients of the arts awards are chosen by a panel of experts.
The dissertation was completed as part of the Collaborative Research Centre 1357 Microplastics, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), under the title: "Environmental Microplastics: How the Surface Properties of Microplastic Particles Determine their Particle-Cell Interactions." Since 2024, Dr Anja Ramsperger has been a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Animal Ecology I at the University of Bayreuth. She is currently investigating, within the framework of a European research project titled "Plastics Fate and Effects in the Human Body - PlasticsFatE", human exposure scenarios to micro- and nanoplastics, their retention in human tissues, and their potential harmful effects in vitro.
