The International Office of the University of Bayreuth is responsible for the 'International Lounge' and 'International Lounge+'.

Theme: The African Union and regional peace and security
Speaker: Dr. Eki Yemisi Omorogbe, University of Leicester, England
The African Union’s (AU) innovative laws and policies provide the AU with wide powers of intervention in its member states, to promote peace, state and human security, and development. Yet, the AU has been reluctant to use these muscular powers in practice. My talk asks whether the AU can deliver peace and security in the African region. That question is important given the recent increase in intra-state armed conflicts and coups d’état in African states. It is also important because United Nations intervention so far has proved unreliable in the African region.
