QS Sustainability Ranking 2026: University of Bayreuth achieves strong results

The University of Bayreuth has significantly improved its standing in the newly released QS Sustainability Ranking 2026, recording an exceptional leap in performance particularly in the area of Environmental Sustainability. Its score in this category rose from 27.4 points in the previous year to 52.4 points—nearly doubling and powerfully reflecting the University’s substantially expanded sustainability initiatives. The overall score also increased, from 71.0 to 76.6 points, further strengthening the University’s position in the international comparison.

In a global comparison, the University of Bayreuth ranks 322nd out of 2,002 institutions (previous year: 318th out of 1,751). In a global comparison, the University of Bayreuth ranks 322nd out of 2,002 institutions (previous year: 318th out of 1,751), in Europe it ranks 156th out of 621 (previous year: 150th out of 563), and in Germany it ranks a strong 21st place among 65 universities evaluated (previous year: 19th out of 50).

Outstanding performance in key areas

Particularly pleasing is the ranking in the area of Health & Wellbeing, where the University of Bayreuth is among the best universities worldwide, ranking 116th with a score of 96.6 (2025: 95,0). It also achieved impressive results in the area of Environmental Research, ranking 182nd worldwide with 93.6 points (2025: 90,3), which underlines its strong research performance in the field of the environment.

The University also achieved above-average results in the areas of Equality (81.7 points, 2025: 80.4), Knowledge Exchange (79.7 points, 20:25: 77,7) and Impact of Education (78.3 points, 2025: 75,4) – all indicators of social responsibility, international cooperation, and educational quality.

Sustainability as a strategic profile feature

This development is all the more remarkable given that the number of institutions ranked has increased significantly compared to the previous year, which naturally intensifies competition and places the rankings in a broader context. Prof. Dr. Susanne Tittlbach, Vice President for Digitalization, Innovation & Sustainability at the University of Bayreuth, is therefore very satisfied with the university's performance in the international comparison: “The results impressively confirm that our strategic investments in sustainability, digitalization, and social responsibility are bearing fruit.
