Reading pleasure under the glass roof
As part of the ‘Night of the Libraries’, Bayreuth University Library organised a special reading night at which seven professors and the Vice President for Research read texts in an unusual format. The event was a perfect fit for the university's 50th anniversary and was part of the diverse celebrations.

Lectures are nothing unusual for professors at any university, they are routine - a home game. But when Ralf Brugbauer, Director of the University of Bayreuth’s library, recently invited seven professors and the Vice President for Research at the University of Bayreuth, Professor Thomas Scheibel, as part of the "Night of the Libraries" (motto: "Knowledge. Share. Discover" - initiated by the German Library Association) for a joint reading in the pop-up cultural centre in Opernstraße, there was a certain tension in the air. After all, the format: "The President and his seven faculties - a night of reading" was not a home game for all participants, but new territory. And what's more, it was a contribution that went along perfectly with the university's 50th anniversary, which is being celebrated this year with a host of different events.
It was Brugbauer himself who made this tension disappear within minutes. His witty and knowledgeable introduction, combined with a cold drink or two, the feel-good atmosphere of the beautifully decorated Kulturquartier and a wealth of inspiring literature and perhaps 70 or 80 good-humoured visitors, created a wonderful atmosphere.
And then it was the professors' turn. They sat on the stage, well-lit and easy to understand. All they had in front of them was water and a literary work that they had chosen themselves. Prof. Dr. Thomas Scheibel, who was standing in for the University President Prof. Stefan Leible that evening, kicked things off. He read from the wonderful and very freely invented travel guide "Molwanien - Land des schadhaften Lächelns" by Santo Cilauro, Tom Gleisner & Rob Sitch. The university's reading night was not only academically serious, it was also full of humour. Kai Purnhagen, Professor of Food Law, picked up the humorous thread when he read from "Doctor Murke's Collected Silence" by Heinrich Böll. He was followed by Volker Ulm, Professor of Mathematics and its Didactics. He read from the book "Rechenschwäche in der Sekundarstufe", which he wrote together with Annalisa Steinecke. In it, the two describe dyscalculia as a serious disability and use an interview to give an example of how a person with dyscalculia navigates everyday life. The last contribution before the break was made by Stefan Schuster, Professor of Animal Physiology. Through a short story from "The Voice of the Dolphins" by Leo Szilard, Stefan Schuster gave a voice to an outstanding (and little-known) scientist of the 20th century.
After the break, when night had fallen over the glass roof of the Kulturquartier and immersed the hall in a wonderfully atmospheric mood, Hartmut Egger, Professor of Macroeconomics, read the grotesque and comical short story "Die Karte des Reiches im Maßstab 1:1" from Umberto Eco's work "Platon im Striptease-Lokal", which he also recommends his students to read. Prof. Dr. Gabriela Paule, Chair of Didactics of German Language and Literature, then gave a very convincing demonstration of how a younger readership can be won over to reading. She read from "Wie ein Roman: Von der Lust zu lesen" by Daniel Pennac - the work that was honoured by the Frankfurter Rundschau with these words: "The stroke of luck of a seduction ... Daniel Pennac is a Don Juan of reading pleasure."
Prof. Paula Schrode, Professor of Religious Studies with a focus on contemporary Islamic cultures, chose the work "Survival of the Richest" by Douglas Rushkoff for the reading night, striking a softer and more thoughtful note. Prof. Christina Roth, Professor of Materials Process Engineering, concluded the evening. With "Dark Clouds; Der Regen ist dein Untergang" by Thilo Falk, "Mein Herz so weiß" by Javier Marias and "Die geheimnisvolle Insel" by Jules Verne, she combined three authors with her own words.
The audience was enthusiastic and gave the speakers a huge round of applause. Ralf Brugbauer also received a lot of positive feedback during the subsequent conversations and chats at the bar. And he heard the recommendation that this event should definitely be repeated so often that it has long been on his mind: "We'll look into it," he said the morning after. He then went on to thank all those who made this evening, which began at 7 p.m. and didn't finish until after 10.30 p.m., such a special evening: His small but extremely dedicated team, the "Kulturquartier" team around Kai Fischer, the barkeeper, the sound and lighting technicians. And of course the audience, who gave the professors the reward that readers particularly like: applause!
