Director (m/f/d) of the Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is a scientific institute centrally located at the University of Bayreuth. As an interdisciplinary scientific institute, it focuses on botany, ecology, and biodiversity in teaching, research, and public education.

Responsibilities:

  • Independent scientific and administrative management of the Botanical Garden
  • Budgetary and personnel responsibility for approx. 35 employees
  • Involvement in teaching, co-design of the teaching portfolio, and supervision of final theses
  • Carrying out research projects, also in cooperation with research groups interested in this field
  • Supervision of the Garden's experimental stations
  • Supervision of the University's herbarium
  • Implementation and further development of the Garden's public education work/ carrying out environmental education projects
  • Involvement in and cooperation with the "Freundeskreis ÖBG e. V." support association

Your Profile: 

  • University degree with a doctorate, preferably in a subject area within the field of botany (plant ecology, plant systematics)
  • Relevant teaching and research experience
  • Sound knowledge of plants
  • Practical experience in the horticultural sector
  • Strong leadership skills and experience
  • Strong organisational and social skills
  • High level of communication, teamwork, and cooperation skills
  • High level of resilience and willingness to work under pressure
  • Very good written and spoken German and English skills
  • Experience in public relations would be an asset


If the requirements under civil service law are met, the employee will be hired in the career bracket of "akademische Räte"; transfer is possible up to A15. The age limit for an initial appointment as a civil servant is 45 years. If the requirements under civil service law are not met, a position pursuant to TV-L may also be considered.
