The Afrikanistik department at the University of Bayreuth, in cooperation with the Language Center, is looking for a

Lecturer for Wolof (m/f/d) as of October 1, 2023.

This is a part time position (50%) for two years. The remuneration is based on pay group 13 TV-L.

The University of Bayreuth is an outstanding and internationally recognized center for inter­discipli­nary African studies with a strong network of African partners. The teaching of African languages from different parts of the continent, which represent its cultural and linguistic diversity, is a central con­cern of teaching and research at the UBT, since languages are the primary key to African concepts and living environments. African language teaching is part of various courses at the UBT, such as the BA/MA AVVA (African Verbal and Visual Arts), MA SprInK (Language, Interaction, Culture) as well as BA Interdisciplinary African Studies, MA Culture and Society of Africa and BA Geographies of Inter­na­tional Development, the MA Global History, the MA Études Francophones Afriques Multiples and the MA European Interdisciplinary Master in African Studies as well as the certificate program afriZert.

With the Cluster of Excellence Africa Multiple: Reconfiguring African Studies, the ERC project "Philo­sophy and Genre: Creating a Textual Basis for African Philosophy" and a large number of other re­search projects, the UBT offers an exciting environment for research in, about and with Africa, to which a contribution is expected from the successful candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • To teach Wolof (9 hours per week) to an international student body using English as the language of instruction
  • Systematic further development of teaching materials (including digital tools, e.g. H5P)
  • Development and expansion of cooperation with universities in Senegal and Gambia to introduce foreign study programs for language acquisition and student exchange
  • Promoting cooperation with other teachers of African languages in Germany and Europe
  • Carrying out tasks and services for the Language Center (e.g. supervising and conducting (placement) tests and examinations, attending meetings) as well as working in the team/African Studies/Afrikanistik department

Requirements:

  • Native or near native proficiency in Wolof
  • An MA or higher qualifications in African languages or literatures, language pedagogy or other relevant fields
  • Extensive experience teaching an African language to non-native speakers
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Openness to learn and use new technologies and teaching methods as well as to develop further digital formats
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and for designing African Studies/African subjects/African Studies at the UBT
