As one of the largest chairs at the University of Bayreuth, we conduct research on polymer materials and cover the entire spectrum from production to processing and recycling. This includes the investigation of innovative recycling concepts for the development of sustainable solution strategies in dealing with engineering plastics.


Research Associate (m/f/d) in the field of polymeric materials with the possibility of a doctorate

Your tasks:

In a publicly funded project (initially limited to 3 years), you will work at the interface between material science and machine learning. You will be working on the topic of mechanical recycling of plastics. Currently, only a fraction of the enormous amount of plastic waste produced worldwide is recycled. One of the reasons for this is the variable quality of recyclates, which limits their use for new products.

This project is therefore about developing an understanding of the recycling of post-consumer PET by reactive extrusion and optimizing the process using machine learning approaches. On the one hand, their task is to conduct extrusion trials for different PET additive blends and to characterize them chemically, thermally, rheologically and mechanically. On the other hand, machine learning models will be developed to predict extrudate quality based on material composition and process parameters, which will later allow targeted process control to achieve high recyclate quality.

Your profile:

You have an above-average university degree (Master or Diploma), preferably in the following fields:

  • Material science
  • Mechanical engineering / plastics technology
  • Chemical engineering / process engineering
  • Computer science / data science / machine learning

Furthermore, you are characterized by an above-average interest in interdisciplinary, scientific questions in the fields of plastics engineering and machine learning. Ideally, you have prior knowledge in both topics. You bring a high degree of motivation and initiative and convince with a confident appearance and a good command of written and spoken English.
