As one of the largest chairs at the University of Bayreuth, we conduct research on polymer materials and manufacturing methods. Sustainability is an overriding element of our research work. This includes the holistic consideration of polymer materials and components along the value chain, the use as well as the final fate.

Research Associate (m/f/d) in the field of polymeric materials with the possibility of a doctorate


Your tasks:

In a publicly funded project (initially limited to 4 years), in collaboration with the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry III and Macromolecular Chemistry I, you will investigate the degradation mechanisms for the formation and degradation of microplastics under simulated environmental conditions. Building on the results of the first funding phase, the focus in the second research period of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) will be on more complex geometries and polymer systems. In particular, targeted solutions for polymer films will be developed to reduce the environmental impact of microplastics. In addition to the production, material design and barrier behavior of mono- and multi-material multilayer films, you will analyze the extent to which synergies or barriers arise in the aging of the individual film layers in the multilayer systems compared to a homogeneous film.

Your profile:

You have an above-average university degree (Master or Diploma), preferably in the following technical or scientific fields:

  • Material science
  • Mechanical engineering / plastics technology
  • Chemical engineering / process engineering
  • Physics or chemistry with experience in polymers

Basic knowledge in the field of natural sciences is a prerequisite for the position. Furthermore, you are characterized by an above-average interest in interdisciplinary, scientific issues in plastics technology. You bring a high degree of motivation and initiative and convince with a confident appearance and a good command of written and spoken English.
