Funding for Smart Data Academy

The Campus Academy for Continuing Education at the University of Bayreuth and the Chair of Environmentally Sound Production Technology receive €100,000 in funding from the Free State of Bavaria for the in-service certificate course "Smart Data Academy".

The Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts is funding the knowledge transfer project "Smart Data Academy", which the Campus Academy for Continuing Education is coordinating together with the Chair of Environmental Production Technology, with around 100,000 euros from 2023. The University of Bayreuth is thus one of three universities to receive financial support as part of the third funding period of the "digital.ING" project.

Data is the raw material of the future and is already omnipresent across all sectors. Even in the manufacturing industry, high data growth can be observed every year, resulting in many new opportunities and challenges for everyday work. It is therefore all the more important to generate data in a targeted manner, to evaluate it intelligently and to use it in a way that adds value by means of digital technologies and artificial intelligence. The in-service certificate course "Smart Data Academy" is designed to support companies in understanding the existing potential and making it usable for themselves.

The "digital.Ing" funding project was launched as early as 2021 by the Free State of Bavaria and the vbw - Vereinigung der Bayerischen Wirtschaft e. V. (Bavarian Business Association). The goal of "digital.ing" is to expand or redesign academic continuing education programmes for engineers and technicians at Bavarian universities. In addition to the University of Bayreuth, the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences and the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences qualified for the current funding phase.

The in-service certificate course "Smart Data Academy" is to cover the five modules "Big Data", "Lean Data", "Smart Data Mining", "Intelligent Data Value Creation" and "Efficient Data Exploitation", with ten 45-minute teaching units for each module. All employees of interested companies with headquarters in Bavaria are eligible to participate. The target group includes engineers with academic qualifications and technicians with previous vocational training as well as skilled workers from the manufacturing industry. Participation in the course does not require any previous relevant knowledge, nor does it require a high school diploma or a university degree.

The aim of the course is to provide participants with basic skills in the areas of big data, data science, data refinement, machine learning and artificial intelligence. For this purpose, a potential analysis of the participating companies is carried out and various methods of data acquisition and data visualisation techniques are taught.
