Bayreuth University Library awarded the "Libraries - Partners for Schools" quality label

Bavarian ministers praise commitment to schools in the region. The innovative teaching concept of Bayreuth University Library was particularly praised.

v.l.t.r.: Katharina Lehner (UB Bayreuth), Dr. Rolf-Dieter Jungk (Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst), Ralf Brugbauer (UB Bayreuth).

The Bayreuth University Library (UB) was once again awarded the seal of quality "Libraries - Partners of Schools 2022-2024" for its intensive and exemplary cooperation with schools in Upper Franconia and the northern Upper Palatinate. At a ceremony, Dr. Rolf-Dieter Jungk, Head of Office at the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art, Katharina Lehner, responsible for the UB's training programme, and Ralf Brugbauer, Director of the UB, presented the certificate.

This year, the competition was all about the pandemic: the innovative teaching concept of Bayreuth University Library, which enabled pupils to get to know the library's services online, was particularly praised. "Together with the schools, we have met the challenges of the pandemic. The seal of approval confirms Bayreuth University Library's long-standing commitment to future generations of students," Katharina Lehner and Ralf Brugbauer are pleased about this award.

Since 2020, Bayreuth University Library has been offering a modular teaching-learning concept for upper secondary schools and vocational and technical upper secondary schools in the region that combines classroom and e-learning elements. Students can first familiarise themselves with the basics of library use and literature research in a digital self-learning course. Depending on their needs, they can then visit a specialised library or take part in a more in-depth live training course on site or via video conference. In addition to subject expertise, the UB offers technical advice for teachers in preparation for the online session.

In addition, the UB Bayreuth organises teacher training for the supervisors of W seminars every semester in cooperation with the Ministerialbeauftragter für die Gymnasien in Oberfranken. The format enables participants to subsequently pass on the content they have learned (e.g. search query syntax, source evaluation) to their students in the classroom. It was conducted for the first time in 2021 in the form of online workshops.

Since 2006, the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts and the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs have jointly awarded the seal of approval for outstanding commitment in the area of schools every two years. A jury of experts decides on the awarding of this distinction. It is made up of representatives of the State Office for Public Libraries, the Institute for School Quality and Educational Research, the Sankt Michaelsbund and the Berufsverband Information Bibliothek e. V. as well as academic libraries. "The seal of quality 'Libraries - Partners of Schools' is the TÜV badge for safe participation in the road traffic of the modern information society", emphasised Minister of State Markus Blume on the occasion of the award in his video message. In addition to Bayreuth UB, a total of 65 Bavarian libraries were honoured this year, 10 of which were college and university libraries.

The diverse range of courses offered by Bayreuth UB is tailored to the needs of different target groups (pupils, students, researchers) and is interactive. It is constantly being developed further and is aimed, among others, at W seminars from Upper Franconia and the northern Upper Palatinate.
