WirtschaftsWoche 2022 research ranking: Bayreuth business economists among the top two percent

Top positions for economists from the University of Bayreuth in the new ranking of the German WirtschaftsWoche (WiWo): Prof. Dr. Ricarda Bouncken, Chair of Strategic Management and Organization, and Prof. Dr. Maximilian Röglinger, Chair of Business & Information Systems Engineering and Value-based Business Process Management, are among the top 100 out of a total of more than 3,200 business economists in the German-speaking world. The basis of the ranking, published in WiWo issue 2022/51, is the research publications in the period 2018 to 2022.

"The top rankings exemplify that we combine excellent teaching with excellent research at the Faculty of Law, Business and Economics at the University of Bayreuth. I congratulate my two colleagues on this great success, which is also a mark of quality for all of us!", says Dean Prof. Dr. Michael Grünberger.

Prof. Dr. Ricarda Bouncken achieves rank 22 (top 1 percent) in the WiWo ranking and is thus only one of three women to be placed among the top 50. "Even though person-based rankings are occasionally viewed critically, I am pleased with my placement in WiWo's new ranking of research performance over the past five years. I am very pleased that my research topics on innovation collaborations, digital innovations, new ventures and new forms of work such as in coworking spaces are so well received in the research world. However, the top group in the ranking also shows that research in the field of business administration has remained a male domain to this day," says the internationally renowned Bayreuth economist.

A central research focus of Prof. Dr. Ricarda Bouncken is the strategic design of innovation processes within a company or in a group of companies. At the same time, she is concerned with the strategic management of international companies, especially with regard to how cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue can promote the goals of a company and strengthen its competitiveness. She directly incorporates the results of her diverse research projects into her economics courses for bachelor's and master's students in Bayreuth. She has held the Chair of Strategic Management and Organization here since 2009. Previously, she held chairs at the Ernst Moriz Arndt University of Greifswald and the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg.

Digitalization, innovation and process management are the focus of Prof. Dr. Maximilian Röglinger, ranked 63rd (top 2 percent) in the WiWo ranking. "The top group includes many scientists whose research focuses on opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurial practice resulting from global technological and ecological developments. Our great performance in the WiWo ranking shows that research with and for practice, as we do in the cooperation between the University of Bayreuth and Fraunhofer FIT, can take place at a top international level. I am very pleased about this," explains Prof. Röglinger.

In his research work, the Bayreuth business informatics specialist investigates, for example, how decisions in process management can be optimized on a customized data basis and how digitization in the areas of production and innovation can strengthen the competitiveness of companies. In addition, he analyzes the influences of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, on the interaction between companies and customers as well as operational processes. In the area of teaching, Prof. Röglinger is the moderator of the Bayreuth Master's programme "Digitalization & Entrepreneurship" as well as co-director of the programme "Finance & Information Management" in cooperation with the TU Munich.

Prof. Dr. Maximilian Röglinger has held the Chair of Business & Information Systems Engineering and Value-based Business Process Management at the University of Bayreuth since 2014. At the same time, he conducts research as an adjunct professor at the School of Management at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. He is deputy scientific director of the Research Center Finance & Information Management as well as deputy institute director of Fraunhofer FIT.
