Research Associate / Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d)

for the ERC-Project “Mycorrhizal Types and Soil Carbon Storage: A mechanistic theory of fungal mediated soil organic matter cycling in temperate forests” to commence on 01.06.2024. The position is available for a period of two years. The salary will be in accordance with pay grade 13 TV-L (100%).

The project investigates the role of mycorrhizal fungi in carbon input and nutrient cycling in soils. Our aim is to elucidate the mechanisms through which mycorrhizal fungi control element fluxes and turnover processes, and to analyze the associated impacts on carbon storage and nutrient availability in forest ecosystems with different types of mycorrhizae. The methodological focus of the position comprises the application of stable isotopes in laboratory studies involving arbuscular and ectomycorrhizal fungi.

Your responsibilities: 

  • Independent research
  • Independently plan and conduct microcosm studies in the laboratory
  • Conduct 13C/15N/2H isotope labeling experiments and enzyme analyses
  • Responsibility for sampling, sample processing and chemical analyses
  • Method development and analysis
  • Statistical data analysis
  • Prepare and contribute to scientific publications
  • Presentation of research results at (inter)national conferences

Your profile: 

  • PhD degree in microbiology, soil science, ecology or a comparable field of environmental sciences
  • Expertise in arbuscular mycorrhizal research
  • Expertise in isotope application is desirable
  • Solid understanding of statistics
  • Excellent English language skills are required
  • German language skills are an asset
  • Commitment, reliability and flexibility
  • Ability to work in a team and interest in interdisciplinary research
  • Willingness to do field work abroad
