Research Associate (m/f/d)

for the ERC-Project “Mycorrhizal Types and Soil Carbon Storage: A mechanistic theory of fungal mediated soil organic matter cycling in temperate forests” to commence on 01.06.2024.

The position is available for a period of three years with the aim of enabling the incumbent to complete a doctoral degree. The salary will be in accordance with pay grade 13 TV-L (75%).

The project deals with the function of arbuscular and ectomycorrhiza fungi for carbon input and nutrient cycling in soils. The overarching aim is to gain a comparative, systematic understanding of the carbon allocation pattern and input dynamics of trees associated with arbuscular and ectomycorrhizal fungi. The research associate will mainly focus on isotope labeling approaches and soil CO2 efflux measurements in laboratory and field settings.

Your responsibilities: 

  • Independent research on carbon allocation in the plant-soil system
  • Independently plan and conduct laboratory and field studies
  • Conduct isotope natural abundance and labeling experiments and CO2 flux measurements
  • Responsibility for soil sampling, processing and chemical analyses
  • Method development and analysis
  • Statistical data analysis
  • Prepare and contribute to scientific publications
  • Presentation of research results at (inter)national conferences

Your profile: 

  • Master’s degree in biology, geoecology or a comparable field of environmental sciences
  • Expertise in soil science, CO2 flux measurements or isotope application is desirable
  • Solid understanding of statistics
  • Excellent English language skills are required
  • German language skills are an asset
  • Commitment, reliability and flexibility
  • Ability to work in a team and interest in interdisciplinary research
