Full Professor of Hydrology (m/f/d)

at salary grade W3 to commence on 1 April 2026. This is a permanent civil service position.

The incumbent will represent the field of hydrology in research and teaching and investigate the ground and surface water and their interactions with the unsaturated zone in relation to the landscape balance of water and matter. The research should emphasise the connections between hydrological and ecological processes and be complementary to the research portfolio of the geo and environmental sciences, including the Bayreuth Centre for Ecology and Environmental Research (BayCEER). The professorship includes management of the University of Bayreuth’s Limnological Station. Priority will be given to applicants working in any one or several of the following areas: catchment hydrology, ecohydrology, limnology, climate change hydrology, and hydrology of the saturated critical zone. The spatial scales of investigation should range between the field and landscape scale. Methods should combine field and laboratory experiments with process-based or statistical modelling. Willingness to collaborate within the geosciences and across units including established collaborative research centres (e.g. CRC 1357 microplastics) is expected.

The incumbent will teach basic and advanced hydrology in the BSc/MSc Geoecology, MSc Environmental Chemistry, and MSc Global Change Ecology programmes, and be experienced in supervising final theses (from BSc to PhD programmes). The ability to teach in English and German (within 2 years of hiring) is expected.

The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree in the geo, natural, and/or environmental sciences, publish in international high-quality scientific journals, and have additional experience in scientific leadership (e.g. editorial roles, conference organisation, lead in coordinated research efforts, board services). Experience in raising third-party funding, and the willingness and interest in contributing to the university’s self-governance and in the Third Mission with external partners, authorities, and the public is expected.

In addition to the general legal requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching, and a post-doctoral qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation). Alternatively, evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered.  Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants. Exceptions will only be made if there are urgent reasons for doing so (Art. 60 Abs. 3 BayHIG).

The University of Bayreuth views the diversity of its staff as an asset and is expressly committed to the goal of gender equality. Female scholars and any persons who can help make the research and teaching profile of the university more diverse are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants with children are highly welcome.
