Full Professor of Global African Arts (m/f/d)

at salary grade W3 to commence as soon as possible. This is a permanent civil service position.

Apart from fulfilling duties related to teaching and research, the holder of the position will also act as the academic director of Iwalewahaus. In terms of governance structure, s/he will work together closely with the managing art director of the house. S/he will be responsible for developing future strategies for curating and enhancing the collection (contemporary arts and African modernism) and the acquisition of third-party funding. S/he will also collaborate with colleagues and institutions on the African continent and in the African diaspora to further develop and expand fellowship- and artist-in-residence-programmes at Iwalewahaus. The professorship participates in the realization of transdisciplinary research projects in the context of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence and/or the Research Centre on Society, Technology and Ecology in Africa at the University of Bayreuth, contributes to the conceptualization and implementation of inclusive and intersectional art exhibition strategies and projects, and engages in interdisciplinary cooperation in the Faculty of Languages & Literatures (especially Musicology, Theater Studies, and Media Studies).


  • primary fields of expertise in several of the following areas: Global Arts, African Modernisms, Art History, Curational Studies, Visual Arts, Compara­tive Aesthetics;
  • a clear regional focus in one part of the African continent or in the African diaspora.

Further requirements:

  • excellent knowledge of the current streams and topics in Global African Arts;
  • excellent research activities and teaching experience, preferably in international contexts;
  • experience in the acquisition and implementation of third-party funded projects as well as the transfer of research findings;
  • experience with interdisciplinary work contexts and academic cooperation, excellent integrative, communication (in German and English) and teamwork skills as well as leadership competencies.
  • The ability to teach in English is expected.

In addition to the general legal requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching, and a post-doctoral qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation). Alternatively, evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. Habilitation equivalence can also be established through publications, e.g. monographs, catalogues, or curation portfolios. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants. Exceptions will only be made if there are urgent reasons for doing so (Art. 60 para 3 BayHIG).
