Junior Professor (W1) of

Geoinformatics – Spatial Big Data with Tenure Track to W3

to commence at the earliest convenience (minimum salary per month: 4,548 euros) as a fixed term civil servant position. This tenure track professorship is funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States.

We are looking for an early-career scholar who is able to work independently and who possesses a high degree of development potential. Applicants should demonstrate that they can adequately represent the field of geoinformatics and spatial big data in research and teaching. In addition, they must have a proven track-record in a field of work involving human or physical geography. A clear approach to interdisciplinary links to other subject areas is expected.

With regard to teaching, the professorship covers innovative teaching content on quantitative geographic methods as well as the ability to deal critically with large spatial data sets. Geographical information systems, spatial statistics, innovative methods of data visualization, databases, and remote sensing data are substantial components of the teaching, which is focused on the degree programmes Geography (B.Sc.), Teacher Education in Geography, Human Geography (M.Sc.), and Environmental Geography (M.Sc.). Teaching activities in the programmes Geoecology (B.Sc., M.Sc.) and Global Change Ecology (M.Sc.) would also be encouraged. Teaching will be conducted in German (B.Sc., teacher education) and in English. Applicants are expected to demonstrate their teaching experience and didactic skills.

Applicants are expected to have developed an independent research profile in the field of geoinformatics, as evidenced by project experience and publications. Their integration into the scientific community on a national and/or international level must be evident. Integration into existing research priorities at the University of Bayreuth, for example in Africa-related research or environmental research, is expected. Successful applicants will contribute to the Department of Geography (GIB) and be active in academic self-administration and academic committees. This position also involves a leadership role in the expansion of our key lab for geoinformation.

In addition to the general administrative requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, proven excellence in teaching, and the ability to carry out scholarly research (generally demonstrated by the quality of the applicant’s doctoral research). If the candidate was employed as a graduate assistant or research associate prior to or subsequent to earning his or her doctorate, the total duration of the doctoral research phase and the employment phase should not exceed six years. The requirements given in §7 of the university’s Bayreuth Track Regulations also apply.

The successful candidate will initially be appointed hired as a fixed-term civil servant for a period of three years and will may be extended for an additional three years upon successful evaluation in the third year of employment. The teaching load is currently set at 5 hours of instruction in the first phase and 7 hours of instruction in the second phase.

The performance agreement, which defines the criteria for the interim and tenure evaluation, is drawn up by the university and the applicant during the appointment negotiations. The agreement shall include criteria in the categories of Research and Academic Teaching, and may also include Third Mission and Academic Engagement. The appointment to the W3 professorship depends exclusively on the outcome of the tenure evaluation. After successful tenure evaluation, the candidate is appointed University Professor (W 3) as a permanent civil servant.
