Junior Professor (W1) of Computational Materials Science with Tenure Track to W3

The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, inter-disciplinary focus areas in research and teaching.  The Faculty of Engineering Science at the University of Bayreuth is currently seeking to appoint a 

Junior Professor (W1) of Computational Materials Science with Tenure Track to W3

(minimum salary: 4,912 euros per month). This is a fixed-term civil service position.

We are looking for an engineering-minded scholar with a strong research profile and in-depth knowledge in one of the following areas:

  • Material taxonomy and ontology: Creation of a common language and development of AI-supported database structures
  • Grey box material models: Combinations of simulation or physical models with real data
  • Data-driven material processing: Use of processing data for machine learning and predictive statement on process- or production-related properties

Applicants should have a very good scientific record in research through relevant publications in national and international journals and demonstrate a committed attitude to academic teaching. Experience in interdisciplinary teaching and research is welcomed, as is international networking.

Cooperation with existing research groups in applied information and within the Faculty of Engineering Science along with participation in cross-faculty focus areas (Advanced Materials and others) as well as cooperation with non-university institutions (Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH and others) is expected. Proposals for this are expressly desired.

In teaching, the future junior professorship should strengthen and expand the bachelor's and master's degree programmes in materials science and materials engineering, in particular. The ability and willingness to hold lectures in German and English is a prerequisite.

In addition to the general administrative requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, proven excellence in teaching, and the ability to carry out scholarly research (generally demonstrated by the quality of the applicant’s doctoral research). If the candidate was employed as a graduate assistant or research associate prior to or subsequent to earning his or her doctorate, the total duration of the doctoral research phase and the employment phase should not exceed six years. The requirements given in §7 of the University’s Bayreuth Track Regulations also apply. The successful candidate will initially be hired as a fixed-term civil servant for a period of three years  and will be extended for an additional three years upon successful evaluation in the third year of employment.  The teaching load is currently set at five hours of instruction in the first phase and seven hours of instruction in the second phase.
