Excellent international reputation: University of Bayreuth among the "Top 20" in the new Humboldt Ranking

University of Bayreuth, Press release No. 142/2020, 16 Octobre 2020

The University of Bayreuth has an excellent reputation among researchers abroad. In the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's ranking published today, it ranks among the top 20 German universities. Indeed, in the field of life sciences, it sits on first place.

With its fellowships and awards, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation sponsors research visits to Germany by outstanding international scholars. The ranking shows which universities in Germany - measured by number of professorships - are particularly attractive for these top international researchers. The University of Bayreuth is one of the few smaller universities in Germany to have made it into this nationwide "Top 20” league. Between 2015 and 2020, a total of 63 researchers who received a fellowship or award opted for the University of Bayreuth. This places it in 19th place in the 2020 Humboldt Ranking, and in the life sciences, on 1st place in all of Germany.

"The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's new ranking is further proof of the strong international profile and excellent worldwide networking of our university. The Humboldt Fellows' research stays in Bayreuth are often a starting point for long-term contact and cooperation in forward-looking research fields - and they continue to add to the cosmopolitan flair of our campus," says University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible.

For more than ten years, the culture of welcome at the University of Bayreuth has been characterised by a Welcome Centre, which, as part of the International Office, supports researchers from abroad with numerous services. It also assists Humboldt Foundation-sponsored scholars who face the threat of war or persecution to continue their research work at the University of Bayreuth. The "Humboldtians" strengthen the reputation of the University of Bayreuth in their countries of origin, where, on their return, they maintain contact with their "home away from home” in Bayreuth.

Since 2019, the international networking of the University of Bayreuth has also been supported by the University of Bayreuth Centre of International Excellence "Alexander von Humboldt" -  or, for short, Bayreuth Humboldt Centre - funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It invites outstanding international scholars to spend research periods at the University of Bayreuth, and also facilitates strategic scientific workshops with international partner institutions.
